The Burghers of Calais is a memorial to a group of fourteenth-century citizens who offered to sacrifice themselves to the English king Edward III to save their long-suffering city, the French port of Calais. Rodin did not portray the burghers in the conventionally heroic way that the Calais city council expected, but rather as vulnerable individuals in varied states of inner turmoil. This concept of the burghers established a modern, anti-monumental tradition of civic sculpture.
The Brooklyn Museum’s collection includes bronze casts of three of the six large figures that compose the final Burghers of Calais monument, as well as this monumental preparatory version of Pierre de Wiessant.
