| Description | Cylindrical porcelain mug with green, gold, and lavender decorative borders and bisque relief in center. The relief is in the form of a medallion flanked by two seated men. Medallion represents infant Hercules battling a bear whose mouth is on a cylindrical gadget; "JOHN / MATTHEWS. / NEW-YORK. / 1832" is molded in the medallion. Man to viewer's right is working at a low vise (?). Man to viewer's left is crouching, holds calipers and has mallet. Relief is signed at lower right, below man with vise. CONDITION: Good. |
